What is the X Scenic?
Get to Timaru for one of the best single-track MTB races in the region. With a redesigned course and three races to suit all levels of rider, this is the place to put your mountain biking skills to the test or develop them to the next level. The X Scenic is a challenging course with less climbing than other events but making up for that with a variety of single track and technical sections, that make you work hard.
The event takes place entirely within Timaru's Centennial Park. If you rode the Timaru 12 Hour, it's in the same park but mostly uses different trails with more single track. Based on feedback from last year, we have made some course changes making it easier to navigate, with more passing options and if you're not technically inclined - more chicken routes. It's now a 9km circuit that links up well established MTB trails developed over the last few years with a variety of short, sharp single track challenges. It is an undulating, flowing course that makes you work but offers great rewards for effort. This year there will be three categories.
Recreational race - one lap (9k)
Sport race - two laps (18k)
Experts - three laps (27k)
All races are run concurrently with wave starts between each category. We have changed the start time so that all races start at 11:00am - this allows riders from Dunedin, Central or Christchurch to travel to the event, ride the race and still get home at a reasonable hour.
There will be an opportunity to try out the course each Monday evening at 6pm from the lake carpark (weather dependent) and from 4pm on the day before the race. Note that at these times the park is open to the public and roads are open to all traffic. Take care!
The prize giving will be held at race end at around 2.30pm and we have some great sponsors on board with a good selection of spot prizes (you must be present to win). There will be coffee, cold drinks and food available. Cash prizes for category winners (categories will be combined if less than five people in a race category).
